Babycake’s Book Stack

Minnesota

Bookmobile in Twin Cities, MN

What are the 3 adjectives you would use to describe your bookstore?

Diverse, Mobile, Community-oriented

Why was your bookstore founded/what role does it play in the community?

Babycake’s Book Stack was founded to create a safe, welcoming space for families to find a wide variety of books that present BIPOC characters, languages, and cultures. The bookmobile is present at community events, music festivals, private events and school events. We take books to the people who most need them and promote family literacy by encouraging daily reading together. Many of the communities that the bookmobile serves do not have easy access to books with #OwnVoices authors. We fill that void. We mostly sell children’s and YA, but we have a selection of adult titles in the store, and we sell for all ages online. Through our apparel sales, we raise funds to offset the cost of books for lower income readers and provide free books to families experiencing grief from the loss of a parent.

Which champion/warrior/wildcat (real or mythological) does your bookstore channel most?

The unlikely inchworm because we keep moving forward with our goal to serve the community, even if it seems like we are only inching forward. We won’t give up.

What is something that no one knows about your bookstore?

Babycake is my daughter’s nickname given to her by my late partner, her father, who passed away unexpectedly in 2015. Also, our logo features a zebraffe, a mixture of a zebra, which represents me, and a giraffe, which represents my late partner, to create my daughter the zebraffe, Babycake.
