Why was your bookstore founded/what role does it play in the community?
The mission of Cultured Books is to first and foremost instill self-love in Black children and children of color to show them they are valued, loved, and wanted. This is done through the curation of positive, uplifting stories and the development of culturally responsive programming.
What makes your bookstore unique?
Something that makes our store unique is what Cultured Books accepts as payment. Youth can purchase self-selected books with a book report, and this book report doesn’t have to be a 500-word essay (though we’ll accept them too). Any way children can share their thoughts on what they’ve read, be it visual art, a podcast episode, even a recipe card, we’ll accept in exchange for a new book. We do this through The Book Report Project™!
What is something that no one knows about your bookstore?
Something that no one knows about our bookstore is that the day to day operations are run by our boss baby Joyce Yvonne.
