Why was your bookstore founded/what role does it play in the community?

Left on Read is a Black-owned, independent bookstore in downtown Wichita, KS. We center Black stories and experiences and hold space for those who value truth, growth, and the transformative power of literature. Our mission is simple: amplify representation, cultivate perspective, and empower community. Whether you’re here for a banned book, a bold conversation, or just a vibe, Left on Read is where stories are honored—and the people telling them matter.

You were born to heal, to grow, to be of service to yourself and community, to practice, to experiment, to create, to have space, to dream, and to connect. – Tricia Hersey

What makes your bookstore unique?

Too often, Black authors and our experiences are ignored and dismissed—left on read. This bookstore exists to change that. Our uniqueness is in our name and in how we unapologetically honor and celebrate Black life, history, and culture. From the titles on our shelves and the events we host to the space and vibe we’ve curated, everything at Left on Read centers our stories with the care, context, and visibility they’ve always deserved.
