712 West Main Street Peoria, IL 61606
What are the 3 adjectives you would use to describe your bookstore?
Creative, Curated, Cultured
Share a quote from a book or poem that bares your bookstore’s soul.
“I wish it need not have happened in my time,” said Frodo. “So do I,” said Gandalf, “and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”J.R.R. Tolkien / The Lord of the Rings
Why was your bookstore founded/what role does it play in the community?
I bootstrapped (built from nothing) this bookstore in the West Main District to provide much needed access to curated content as diverse as our community. Lit. on Fire has provided a safe space for all BIPOC, LGBTQIAP+ folx, and neurodivergent folx to be themselves, to find acceptance, and to see themselves represented within the community.
Which champion/warrior/wildcat (real or mythological) does your bookstore channel most?
Eowyn of Rohan, who slays the Witch King by her own hand, with the help of Merry Brandybuck, the everyday heroes of Lord of the Rings.
What makes your bookstore unique?
Our mission sets us apart from other bookstores in the area: Reducing Environmental Impact, Reconnecting the Community, and Reviving Bohemia. Also, in the fact that our community has little LGBTQIAP+ representation or leadership.
What is something that no one knows about your bookstore?
A lot of folx may realize that Lit. on Fire Books is owned and operated by only myself, but a lot of folx don’t realize that I struggle from a variety of chronic illnesses that make every day that I come to work and make a difference in the community an absolute triumph. I am a survivor of domestic violence, as well, so I work hard to raise awareness and advocate for survivors of domestic violence. I welcome anyone who is suffering to come to me for resources, to talk, or to have a safe place to exist for a few moments.
