Why was your bookstore founded/what role does it play in the community?
We aim above all things to be approachable. We love books & we want other folks to love them, too! So we created a space where people can come together, find good books to read, and connect with each other. We never genre-shame; we think all reading is good reading. And we offer a diverse selection of authors, so that folks can get acquainted with new voices. We love to recommend books and to hear our customers’ recommendations because it makes us a stronger book-loving community.
What is something that no one knows about your bookstore?
We never intended to sell new books. Never, not at all. We started out as a 100% used bookstore. But 2 things happened almost simultaneously: 1) we realized we couldn’t just wait for diverse books to show up–we needed to actively seek out the newest, brightest, most promising voices, and 2) the pandemic hit, and we stayed afloat by special ordering books and delivering to folks’ doorsteps. Now we’re about 50/50 new & used. And we love it! We get to offer a curated selection of used books to our customers (which is budget & environment friendly!), and we get to stock the latest books that speak to our mission to offer some of the best diverse fiction & social justice oriented nonfiction out today.
